According to it's new scientific focus, the name of the institute has been changed to 'Leibniz Institute for Age Research - Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI)', in honour of the German-American biochemist and nobel prize laureate Fritz A. Lipmann
The scienific re-orientation of the former IMB and the focussing on biomedical age research was documented by the new name of the institute. Fritz Lipmann can be regarded as a pioneer of age research based on his life-long exploration of cellular energy, energy usage and the group transfer mechanism.
